Weekly Speaker Events

Every Tuesday, 6pm

Each week of term at the HB Allen Centre, we will have a talk from a different speaker associated with effective altruism, followed by free pizza.

New people are especially welcome every week, but we recommend these talks to everyone interested in effective altruism.

It’s a great opportunity to hear directly from professionals acting on EA principles, and to ask them your questions!

Drop-in Discussions

Every Tuesday, 5pm

Before the speaker event, join us at 5pm at the HB Allen Centre for a discussion about a topic related to effective altruism. New people very welcome! No knowledge required – just turn up.

In week 2, we’ll be discussing whether we can resolve the apparent tension between having a large positive impact and taking good care of yourself.

Some other topics we might discuss this term:

  • Do global poverty interventions neglect the root causes of problems?

  • Can we resolve the apparent tension between having a large positive impact and taking good care of yourself?

  • How valuable is external career advice vs. figuring out your own plan?

  • Are we living in the most important century of all time?

  • Are we really in triage every second of every day?

  • Is reducing suffering overwhelmingly more important than other altruistic priorities?

Co-working

Every Tuesday From 1pm

As well as relaxed co-working in the HB Allen Centre cafe, we also have a designated room for quiet working (five-minute breaks every half hour).

You’re very welcome to drop in and work on anything at all! For example:

  • Your university work

  • Reading for one of our seminar programmes

  • Writing up some thoughts about a topic in effective altruism, to discuss with others

If this goes well, we might extend co-working to all day on Tuesdays next term.
