About us

What We Do

Effective Altruism Oxford is a student group based in Oxford University. We aim to enable Oxford students to have a large positive impact on the world.

To do this we create opportunities for students to learn about the world’s most pressing problems and how to use their career to help solve them, and foster a friendly community of people helping each other to do as much good as we can in the world.

Our Committee

Hey! I’m Sophie, a second year DPhil student in Neuroscience.

What I love about EA is the feeling that we can indeed make a difference and do something useful with our resources, which I find quite empowering.
I am excited about longtermism (in particular biosecurity), global health and wellbeing, and community building. I’ve also been thinking about the intersection between EA and neuroscience, as well as mental health as a potential cause area. Lastly, I’m a passionate writer, and would like to spend more time writing EA-related content.

If you want to have a chat, don’t hesitate to contact me at luisagullino@outlook.com

Hi I'm Gideon and I am a first year undergraduate studying Earth Sciences at University College. I love EA Oxford because it is so exciting to find such a dedicated, intellectually rigorous yet humble, open, diverse and passionate community, full of genuinely wonderful individuals.

I am particularly interested in longtermism and global catastrophic risks, the impact of technology and the narratives around it, particularly climate engineering research. At the moment, I am trying to learn and think more about ethics, metaethics and decision making under moral uncertainty.

Outside EA, I love playing board games, watching rugby, visiting museums and art galleries and learning about pretty much anything.

If you want to speak to me, you can always contact me at gfuterman@hotmail.co.uk.

Hi, I’m Ivo!

I’m a Biologist (just graduated from a Masters studying spider dancing which is real thing yes) and am now doing independent research into how we might understand and resolve risks posed by Artificial Intelligence using knowledge of intelligent behaviour in natural systems.

I am interested in literally everything: right now tropical diseases, animal rights and biological risks in particular.

I love walking and playing catch, so if that sounds like a fun way to find out more about EA please get in touch (it would make my week!) at ivoandrews@gmail.com.

Hi, I'm Paddy and I studied Philosophy at Durham.

I love moral philosophy (unusual I know!), particularly philosophical puzzles surrounding future generations and moral uncertainties. On the non-EA related side of things, I enjoy slacklining, live music, solving Rubik's cubes and the occasional trip to the pub.

I am always happy to discuss EA or anything else, so feel free to reach out to me at paddyjamesonallen@gmail.com or connect with me on Facebook.

Hi, I'm Alejandro. I studied Physics and Philosophy at Bristol and I’m one of the full-time organisers of EA Oxford. At the moment I'm trying to work out how important I think AI Safety is.

I'm extremely into quizzing, mildly into Twitter and vaguely into art film.

If any of those interest you, do get in contact at alejandro@eaoxford.com

Hey I’m Callum! I just graduated from doing CAAH and am now one of the full-time organisers of EA Oxford this year. I have loved being a part of the EA community for the last few years and am excited to help our community in Oxford develop! Within EA, I am excited about how to think about EA can improve and where we might be going wrong, and how I can help to get more people excited about having an impact! I also like thinking about other groups' perspectives and how we can learn from them.

Outside of EA, I like ballroom/latin dancing, chess and poker! I am also obsessed with my favourite combination of cake and coworking! I am very happy to chat to anyone about anyone so feel free to reach out here: callum@eaoxford.com or find me on FB.

Hello! I'm Lili, and I'm in my last year of Psychology & Philosophy, mainly specialising in ethics of technology and collective digital wellbeing.

I've loved being involved in EA so far and am always excited to meet new people interested in finding out how to have a positive impact. I'm happy to discuss any area of EA, but know most about AI alignment, institutional decision making, social cooperation & reducing the risk of malevolent humans.

EA aside, I love walks through nature, music, video games, studio ghibli, and art - so feel free to get in touch, I'm always down for a chat about anything at all.

Email me at elizabeth.emery@magd.ox.ac.uk or find me on Facebook.

Hi, I'm Isaac, and I'm (finally) at the end of my DPhil!

I've been interested in effective altruism for a few years now, after I started listening to the 80,000 Hours Podcast (which I recommend). I'm especially interested in whether it is possible to positive affect the distant future, in historical contingency, and in the effects of new technologies that might be developed in our lifetimes.

I'm also very keen to hear any worries about or criticisms of effective altruism in general and EA Oxford in particular. Email me at isaac@eaoxford.com

Hello! I'm Andrew (He/Him) and I'm a third year physicist at Jesus college. I've been aware of/interested in EA for about 5 years and have been gradually becoming more excited by/involved with the community in Oxford.

I'm interested in longtermism, not least global priorities research, AI safety and increasingly by suffering risk reduction.

Outside of EA I like climbing, woodworking and repetitive electronic music - love to talk about any of these, EA or all at andrew.stephen.fletcher@gmail.com.

Hey everyone! I’m Annabella (She/Her) and i’m in my 4th year, studying for a masters in materials science.

I’ve been involved in EA for a year now and keen to keep learning more. I’m always up for a chat, giving advice, and coworking so feel free to reach out!

Looking forward to meeting new people and better getting to know familiar faces while I’m part of the EA Ox committee :)

Heya! I’m Hannah, a finalist in BA Human Sciences (a big mish-mash of human biology and social sciences) at Wadham.

I first heard about EA during the Fresher’s Fair, but only started engaging with its ideas in my second year. I’ve found the community to be the most warm, welcoming and intellectually curious bunch of people I’ve come across in Oxford, and a great place to grow as a person. Within EA I’m most interested in global health policy and pandemic preparedness. I’m still figuring out to what extent I accept longtermist arguments, there’s a range of views on this within the community.

I love a swim in a river/lake at any time of the year, sketching and painting, and going on long walks, and would love it even more to be doing one of these while having chat about EA!

You can email me at Hannah.gardner@wadham.ox.ac.uk or reach out on FB messenger.

Hi! I'm Karan (He/Him), currently doing a masters in Maths and Statistics.

I started EA at the start of 2022 and really like the tools it advocates to think about doing good / my own thoughts. I'm interested in AI Safety and improving diversity (both in EA and outside of it), but am always excited to learn and talk about other things with people

If you ever wanna have a chat, I have a pretty nice tea collection (mulled wine tea? Chocolate orange herb? hotel? trivago) we can drink and also enjoy long-ish walks and runs (depending on how active you want to be while we chat).

Feel free to contact me at karan.ruparell@wadham.ox.ac.uk

Hi, I’m Chanelle a second year PPEist at Wadham!

I am keen to help make EA more accessible, as this is crucial to building a large and diverse community able to challenge and subsequently improve their worldviews and cause prioritisations to maximise impact.

I am particularly interested in the implications of a longtermist perspective and epistemic challenges to this.

I’m Jakub from Poland and I’m studying Economics and Management.

Navigating through new EA concepts may at first seem challenging and intimidating so my aim is to make our community as accessible as we can, trying to help engage and encourage people to do the best that they can.

Current areas of interest: Animal Suffering and AI

Hey, I am Anna! I am an active soldier in the Federal Armed Forces Germany with a background in Engineering Sciences/Defence Systems. Here in Oxford, I am studying Public Policy which clearly is relevant to our work at EA. The main question that intrigues me about EA is how we can design evidence-based policies for the common good.

Given my background, security policies are particularly interesting to me but I love having a look into topics beyond my main area of expertise and to find out how we as individuals can make a change every day, e.g. via our choice of food and trusted labels, means of transport, and donations.

Feel free to reach out to me via anna-pestalozza@web.de

Hi! Im Tym.

I am a second year Politics and Economics student at Magdalen.

My interests lie in a range of different policy and governance questions and for EA.

Hello - I am Bill!
I joined Exeter College to study PPE in 2022. Effective Altruism's interests for me lay mainly within the philosophical discussions and how to combine doing the most good possible with current moral theories. EA Oxford is a unique place in this world where you can truly be intellectually challenged and have a strong community to support you and help see your potential impact. I am very excited to help out on the committee and to support people getting involved with Effective Altruism.

I can be reached out on bill.chen@exeter.ox.ac.uk

Cheerio,
Bill

I'm Daisy,

I’m one of the full-time organisers at EA Oxford. I've recently completed a masters in Global Politics at LSE, throughout which I worked as an operations contractor and event organiser for various EA-aligned organisations, and have been involved in EA community building since 2017.

When I'm not busy EA-ing, you'll likely find me climbing, kayaking, hiking, or stroking a cat.
