What We Do

Effective Altruism Oxford is a student group based in Oxford University.

We run speaker talks, discussion groups, workshops, and research groups all about trying to work out how we can best help others.

Our Committee

president

Hello! I'm Suryansh. I’m in the last year of an MPhil in Economics and I also work for the Center for AI Safety, writing a textbook on AI safety, ethics, and society.

I got into effective altruism by reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and I’m particularly interested in AI Alignment and Global Health & Development. I also play too many sports and a lot of DnD. If you want to get in contact, you can do so here

Vice-president

Hello, I'm Caleb! I'm a second-year Ancient and Modern Historian here at Oxford, with a passion for connecting people with ideas. I have been involved with discussion groups at EA Oxford, as well as representing the Against Malaria Foundation. When I am not at a library (or perhaps a pub), you might catch me on a tennis court.

If you're interested in learning more about nuclear war (and ideally how to avoid it), or are interested in joining my nuclear risk reading group, feel free to reach out.

Communications lead

Hi! I’m Millie and I’m studying for a masters in Victorian literature, having done my undergrad at Durham.
I’ve been involved in EA for a year and am most interested in animal ethics and community building. I understand that EA can sometimes seem intimidating, so I’m especially keen to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
In my spare time, you might find me on air at my local radio station, or in a bookshop or art gallery.
Feel free to contact me at milliemorton1@gmail.com

Outreach lead

HI! I’m Tym and I’m a final-year year Politics and Economics student at Magdalen.

My interests lie in a range of different policy and governance questions and for EA

Ai governance lead

I'm in my final year of studying PPE, and I run the AI governance side of the AI Safety & Governance Team, where I run an Advanced AI governance reading group. I was on the EA Oxford committee in 2022, then an ERA research fellow in AI governance over that summer, and I just finished as a GovAI summer research fellow. When I'm not degree-ing I'm usually lifting, writing bad prose, or arguing about philosophy.

I'd be happy to talk about AI safety or governance, direct you towards relevant resources, or get you into my AI governance reading group, so feel free to get in contact

Catherine

global health and development lead

Hi! I work for the Canadian Government to apply machine learning to infrastructure policy issues and as a Senior Researcher for the G7/G20 Research Group. In my spare time, I enjoy learning languages, developing new technical skills, and reading about history.

I’m currently running two global development groups for EA Oxford: one focused on applying machine learning solutions to global development and one focused on developing open source maps for areas struck by disaster.

I’m happy to provide statistical advice or explanations for either research project and you can get in contact here

Jess

Biorisk and pandemic preparedness lead

Hi, I'm Lin. I'm doing a DPhil in health economics at Christ Church, focussing on emerging technologies.

I've worked on various projects in the biorisk space. I was recently involved in setting up the Oxford Biosecurity Group, and in the past I've done other work and projects including impact evaluation on pandemic preparedness advocacy and researching potential high impact health security charities.

I'm very keen to chat to anyone who is interested in learning more about how they can work in pandemic preparedness or reducing biorisk. Feel free to reach out to me here

Lin

Director

Hey I’m Callum! I recently graduated from Oxford and now work part-time to help organise EA Oxford, in addition to doing some policy work. I am very interested in thinking about political careers, AI governance, space governance, and how EA can interact with other groups. Outside of EA, I like ballroom/latin dancing, chess and poker! I am also obsessed with my favourite combination of cake and coworking!

I might be a useful person to talk to if you want connecting to others in the community, thoughts on career plans, or just want to know more about what’s going on in EA Oxford. Feel free to reach out here: callum@eaoxford.com or find me on FB.

Community manager

Hello! I’m Jordan – one of the professional community builders at EA Oxford. I studied philosophy at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, and ran the EA group there.

I’ve also organised several EA community conferences and events, and supported various groups in Africa. I’ve been involved in EA for quite a while, having first been influenced by the writings on Peter Singer. My focus initially was on farmed animal welfare, which later shifted to AI safety. Now, I’m diving deeper into re-evaluating my cause prioritisation. For fun, I enjoy dancing (badly), thrift shopping and attending gigs.

If you’d like to get in touch about anything related to EA Oxford, email me at jordan@eaoxford.com

Animal welfare lead
